Jatilan: Javanese trance dance

I was lucky enough to see a traditional Javanese trance dance performance in the village of Tanjung Sari, Central Java. Not performed for tourists but as entertainment for the villagers. It’s a very wild and impressive dance. While gamelan music plays the dancers go into trance, and they eat broken glass, chilli peppers or even peeling a whole coconut with their teeth! After a while when the music comes to a climax some dancers fall down screaming and the local priest (Dukun) must get them out of trance before they hurt themselves or others.

Currently I’m travelling through Java, Indonesia. The ramadan (Indonesian: puasa) has just begun. That means it’s quite difficult to get a good night sleep, because the mosques are working overtime and the people are so cheerful that they light fireworks all night. Selamat Puasa!!

Documentary: City of Photos

CITY OF PHOTOS (2005) is a documentary on the ups and downs of small photo studios in the cities of India. In these shabby spaces neighborhood residents give free rein to their fantasy. With the backgrounds and props on hand they transport themselves to any place or time they desire. Retouching the photos makes the illusion complete. CITY OF PHOTOS begins in a photo studio in Calcutta, the city where the foundations for Indian photography were laid. Here people have themselves photographed in any situation imaginable. One of the favorite backdrops is the scene of the airplanes tearing into the Twin Towers on 9/11. Other spectacular disasters are also popular.

The journey continues to a Muslim slum in Ahmedabad. Here the owner of a small photo studio has an intimate relation with his clients, permitting him to carry out their wishes precisely. Often the reasons why they have photographs made are tragic. Many Muslims pose amid the ruins of their houses, which have been plundered and set ablaze in state-supported anti-Islamic riots. A young Muslim who cannot associate with the Hindu girl he loves asks for a double portrait, created by computer manipulation. With stories like these, CITY OF PHOTOS gives us a picture of individual desires and popular taste, and through the photography shows the vital, complex and sometimes despairing face of modern India.

Life in the Thar Desert – India

In October 2009 I visited the Thar Desert in Rajasthan to shoot the life in the villages. The Thar Desert is also known as the Great Indian Desert, it’s a large arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. The main of the people in desert is agriculture and animal husbandry. Most of the villages were just 3 or 4 jhugis, which are housing units formed with straws and thin wood-sticks. Hard life… beautiful people.

Diwali 2009 – India

In October 2009 I was in Jodhpur, Rajasthan during the celebration of Diwali.

The word ‡§¶‡•Ä‡§™‡§æ‡§µ‡§≤‡•Ä (Dipavali) literally translates as a row of lamps in Sanskrit. It is traditional for adherents of Diwali-celebrating faiths to light small clay lamps filled with oil to signify good over evil within an individual. During Diwali, many wear new clothes and share sweets/snacks with each other. Some Indian business communities start their financial year by opening new account books on the first day of Diwali for good luck the following year.

In Hinduism, Diwali marks the return of Lord Raama to his kingdom Ayodhya after defeating Ravana (the Demon Kin, and also the demons KING) – the ruler of Lanka in the epic story of Ramayana. It also celebrates the slaying of the demon king Narakasura by Lord Krishna. Both signifying the victory of good over evil. In Jainism, Diwali marks the attainment of moksa by Mahavira in 527 BC. In Sikhism, Diwali commemorates the return of Guru Har Gobind Ji to Amritsar after freeing 52 other Hindu kings imprisoned in Fort Gwalior by Emperor Jahangir. He was welcomed by the people who lit candles and divas to celebrate his return. Which is why Sikhs also refer to Diwali also as Bandi Chhorh Divas meaning “the day of release of detainees”.

Diwali is considered to be a national festival in India and Nepal. The aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed around the world regardless of faith.
